Assembly #1971 represents the Patriotic Degree of the Knights of Columbus of the Norther Black Hills, South Dakota. Our meetings are held monthly every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7pm at St. Joseph Church in Spearfish, SD.
Assembly 1971 – “In The Beginnings” (summary)
An organizational meeting, to establish a new General Assembly in the Northern Black Hills, was held on April 9, 1978 at Saint Joseph’s Church, in Spearfish, at 2:00 PM. Members present from Spearfish were John Deibert, George Miller, Father William J. O'Connell, Leo McGuigan, Gerald Foltz, Robert Yanzick, Henry Douglas, Dr. Michael Brown, Gerald O'Brian, Frank Mattern, Joseph Damberger and William S. Ohnemus. From Lead were Alber P. Gilles, District Deputy , Frank Caretto, Paul Cavin, Frank Krejci, Michael Rachich, Fredrick Schopen, and Jon R. Trucano. From Deadwood was Kenneth R. Lewis. From Belle Fourche were Edward M. Eixenberger, James D. Nestor, and Vincent Schmaltz. From Faith was Andrew M. Fishbach. From Hill City was J. D. Hobart. From Custer was Martin Hassett. From Riverton, WY was Wallace K. Kucera.
William Ohnemus, Sr., as such, called the first meeting of the Nothern Hills Assembly, to order on October 22, 1983. He was serving as the Faithful Navigator of the Bishop Lawler Assembly, of Rapid City, at the time. The meeting date for the Assembly was set as the third Tuesday of the month. Meetings of the Assembly are to rotate between Third Degree councils in the Assembly area.
Officers elected to serve from October 22, 1983 through June 30, 1984: FATHFUL NAVIGATOR: Albert P. Giles, Jr.; FAITHFULL COMPTROLLER: Frank A Caretto; FAITHFUL FRIAR: Father Paul G. Dahms; FAITHFUL CAPTAIN: Louis J. Chaney; FAITHFUL ADMIRAL: Willian S. Ohnemus Sr.; FAITHFUL PURSER: Arden J. Trandahl; FAITHFUL PILOT: Leo W. McGuigan; FAITHFUL SCRIBE: John A. Roggenbuck; INNER SENTINAL: Francis W. Haley; OUTER SENTINAL: Owen R. McDermott; TRUSTEE, ONE YEAR: Donald L. Barbour; TRUSTEE, TWO YEARS: Robert F. Yanzick; and TRUSTEE, THREE YEARS: John J. Sweeney.
By-Laws were accepted requiring ten (10) members be present to form a quorum and conduct business. Fifteen (15) members must be present to amend the By-Laws.
Fifteen Fourth Degree Knights participated in the ordination of seminarian David Orians to the Office of Permanent Deacon.
At the June 6th meeting, notification was received approving the Northern Hills Assembly number 1971 Charter and By-Laws. The Charter and By-Laws were amended to add Black to the Assembly name and adding the names of the Charter members, thus the name becoming “Northern Black Hills Assembly 1971.” The assembly donated $250.00 for a trip by the diocesan seminarians, through Father Raymond Deisch. The charter night banquet was set for July 28, 1984 at the Holiday Inn, Spearfish, SD, with installation of Officers at the 5:30 PM Mass followed by the Charter night banquet.
